Fort Oranje

Fort Oranje, a fortress with courtyard and three bastions (originally four), built on the rock face of Oranjestad. Originally built by the French in 1629, it was abandoned a few years later. In 1636, Zeeland, with a commission from the Dutch West India Company, took possession of the then unoccupied island. The Dutch built the current Fort Oranje on the same spot where the French fort was located.
